The banana araçari (
Pteroglossus bailloni) can measure about 39 centimeters and stands out for its yellow plumage. It belongs to the same family as toucans, the Ramphastidae.It features predominantly yellow feathers. The back blends with an emerald and olive green hue and a red stripe is observed near the tail. Around the eyes, the species does not have down and stands out for its red skin. The male is larger than the female.
It feeds on juçara palm fruits, embaúbas, fig trees and the eggs and chicks of other birds.
It lives in pairs or in groups of up to seven individuals. The vocalization is different from that of other araçaris. It occurs in restingas, secondary forests, in the Atlantic Forest on the slopes.
It can be seen jumping between branches and is considered a great seed disperser.
The female lays about three eggs and the couple share the tasks since incubation.
Species can be found in mountainous regions in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul and also in Argentina and eastern Paraguay.
