When used for gemstones such as diamond, one carat represents a weight equal to two hundred milligrams. Applied to gold, however, the carat is a measure of the metal's purity, not its weight. A carat of gold is its total weight divided by 24. The purity of gold is expressed by the number of parts of gold, which make up the bar, nugget or jewel. The gold of an object with 16 parts of gold and eight parts of another metal is 16 carats. Pure gold is 24 carats.
