Who is he? Who is he?

In 2014, the discovery of a new species of dolphin was announced, which lives in the waters of the Araguaia, a river that originates in Goiás and flows through other nearby states. It was there all the time, swimming to and fro, but it was a different species, which was called the Araguaia dolphin.

Without any physical difference in relation to other dolphins that caught the researchers' attention, the Araguaia dolphin was only discovered through DNA analysis. Really! Comparing the genetic code of the porpoises that inhabited the rivers of the Amazon in the laboratory, they noticed something different, something new in the porpoises that inhabited the Araguaia river.

Researching a little more, the scientists found that in the region of Belém and Marajó bay, some porpoises were of the same species found in the Araguaia and Tocantins rivers. This means that the Araguaia dolphins can be found beyond the Araguaia river. They also swam in the estuary (the area between the river and the sea) and even in the coastal region, close to the mangrove.

Apparently, the Araguaia dolphin prefers to live near the ports of some cities. In these places, he ends up receiving fresh fish in his mouth given by humans.

It is still a mystery how the relationship between humans and dolphins began, but the fact is that this contact is very successful with locals and tourists. We know, however, that feeding wild animals is not a good idea. In addition to the risk of getting sick because they might receive something different or spoiled, animals tend to get used to easy food and lose their ability to hunt their own food.

Another concern is that the Araguaia dolphins, discovered so recently, are already at risk of extinction. The Tocantins-Araguaia basin, which gives origin to the animal's name, has seven dams built and others are planned. These dams isolate the populations of porpoises and this makes the animals reproduce among themselves and become more fragile, with a greater risk of developing diseases, for example. Fishing and pollution in the bay of Marajó represent an extra threat, in addition to the intense traffic of boats and, occasionally, the noisy jet skis in the most touristic places.

Conserving the environments in which the Araguaia dolphins live is our way of helping this and other local species to follow the natural course of their lives.
