We are very used to films and series in which the dog is the protagonist, but have you ever read a book narrated by a dog? In “The Call of the Forest”, the emblematic journalist Jack London presents us with a story of perseverance, determination and learning. All this from the perspective of Buck, a cross between a St. Bernard and a Collie.
Buck is treated like a king in his home and is much loved by his owners. Soon, he carries with him a great respect and trust in humans. As an irrational being, he does not understand what is happening when he is taken by Manuel, an employee of his owner, and sold to two unknown men. In the first moments of its “abduction”, the dog is introduced to feelings and sensations hitherto unknown, such as hate, anger and pain. Before long, his trust in humans turns to fear and anger. […]
The dog is trained using violence until it is sold again. He begins a journey together with other dogs, towards an unknown path for him. […]
[…] The work shows us how an animal being – but we can relate it to a human being – adapts to the situations and environments in which he finds himself, as well as the need for unity with others in his species.
The grace of the story lies in the fact that the author brilliantly narrates the thoughts and instincts of an animal, which is so present in our daily lives. Creating affection for Buck is very easy, especially for those who like dogs, but throughout the book we learn to understand that he is an animal and, after all, has animal instincts. “The Call of the Forest” is a quick read, only 111 pages long. It's definitely the kind of book that the reader just puts down when he gets to the end. It's a simple, straightforward read, without overly fancy or intellectual language.
