Born in Novgorod, in the former Soviet Union, on July 6, 1937, Vladimir Ashkenazy became an Icelandic citizen in 1972.
He entered the Moscow Conservatory at the age of 8, and later won two important piano prizes: the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1955 and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1962.
Brahms' two Sonatas for clarinet and piano are among his last works, when he had practically stopped composing.
