Hunger drops for the first time in fifteen years

In 2010, the number of hungry people in the world fell for the first time in 15 years, thanks in part to lower food prices. However, the world is still far from meeting the goal stipulated in the Millennium Goals, which envisage the reduction of malnutrition in developing countries.

“This is an unacceptable number,” said the director-general of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Jacques Diouf. “Every ten seconds, a child dies due to malnutrition. Hunger is humanity's greatest tragedy, a scandal,” he said.

About two-thirds of the world's undernourished people are found in China, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia.
