Anyone who has come across the caboclo-d’água and is alive to tell the story is lucky! Some fishermen have seen him and say that he is not a pretty figure to behold, no. It lives in the waters of rivers, protecting the bed, animals and plants. It is not known where he came from, but whoever fishes the São Francisco River told us what he is like.
He looks like a muscular man, very strong indeed, tanned, but with only one eye in the middle of his forehead. He lives on the river, but sometimes he walks around the land, close to the riverside, but he soon goes back into the water. With his fantastic powers, he can even be in two places at once and his body is closed. This means that no one can hurt him, neither bullets, nor stones, nor sticks hurt the water caboclo. That's what they say!
He is angry! That's why fishermen fear him. When he is angry, he clings to the bottom of canoes and fishing boats. Scale, scale until the vessel turns over. To protect themselves, fishermen keep a machete in the middle of the boat, as the steel scares away the caboclos-d'água. You'll know why!
There's only one way to get it under control. To please him, protecting the river and conserving nature. Then he becomes friends, even helps with fishing and avoids floods.
