On April 27, 1500, Mestre João, astronomer in Pedro Álvares Cabral's fleet, determined the latitude of the future Cabrália Bay by measuring the height of the Sun: approximately 17 degrees. Exact measurement: 16 degrees and 1/4. The result of the work is the oldest cartographic document in Brazil, transmitted to King Manuel 10, together with a letter from Pero Vaz de Caminha.
Spaniard Joam Farás was born in Galicia and moved to Lisbon around 1485. Astronomer, astrologer, cosmographer and physician, he was Dom Manuel's private surgeon. It is said that, before treating someone, he made his birth chart. The king himself sent daily to see how the stars were doing.
Mestre João went down in history as the first scientist to study Brazil. In his honor, the Brazilian Society of Cartography (SBC) instituted Cartographer's Day. The date of April 27, 1500 was determined by the Julian calendar, used at the time. Corrected to the current Gregorian calendar, this is now May 6th. When observing the stars that shone over the bay, Mestre João glimpsed a constellation. Although it had been known since antiquity and served to help navigators cross the equator, the group still had no name. Upon seeing the design in the sky, Mestre João compared it to a cross and baptized it: Cruzeiro do Sul.
