“Maria Flor, the last Spix's Macaw”, by the writer Xico Farias, addresses nature preservation, the life of the sertanejo and the culture of the northeast
Maria Flor is the character in the work of writer Xico Farias, represented by the last remaining Spix's Macaw. In the middle of the Brazilian hinterland, in the fictional city of Assaré do Alto, he fights against wild animal traffickers and the extinction of his own existence. Despite the critical scenario, the character dreams of meeting others of her kind and someone she cares about. fall in love with and build a family with, therefore, he writes letters to different places in that search. This is the plot of the book “Maria Flor, the last Spix's Macaw”.
With an accessible language for readers from 10 years old, the writer takes the opportunity to portray not only the Spix's Macaw, but also other animals of the northeastern fauna, such as: seriema, northeastern cardinal, agouti and tatupeba. In addition, Xico explores in the plot the preservation of nature, the life of the sertanejo and the culture of the northeast.
“I have a relationship of love, care and respect with nature. I like to, whenever possible, make children aware of the importance of caring for the environment. I think it's important to show that small actions in our daily lives make a difference. Waste that you dispose of properly is already a great gain for nature, a great gain especially for us who are part of it too”, reports Xico.
According to him, with the book he intends to make these young readers realize the importance of being aware of caring for nature, animals and respect for people from other regions.
“Parents are the great promoters of awareness and awareness of their children [...] I think that literature and the arts as a whole are tools important in this awareness, just as teachers are very important in this work of encouraging young people to read and inform themselves”, emphasizes the writer.
