In 1942, the Tupi radio station in Rio de Janeiro organized a contest to choose the lyrics in Portuguese for the melody of Happy Birthday to You, created in 1875 by the North Americans Mildred and Patricia Hill. The champion version, selected by the Brazilian Academy of Letters, was composed by a pharmacist from the interior of São Paulo.
Bertha Celeste Homem de Melo used to participate in contests using pseudonyms. She alone, among five thousand competitors, wrote four different verses, without repetition: Happy Birthday to You / In this especial date / a lot of happiness / Many years of life. It only took her five minutes to create the song.
