The southern hawk or sovi lives on the edges of forests and fields and can be seen flying over forest fires to hunt. It feeds on ants, termites and other insects, which it captures with its feet and eats while flying.
It is migratory from the Pantanal, south and southeast of Brazil, with a resident population in the Amazon. The species is aggressive and territorial against other hawks, which pass close to the nest. During this period, it emits a thin, curly whistle, similar to that of a bird.
