All you have to do is let a little soap into your eyes – or even a little shampoo or perfume, when you get ready – for irritation and a burning sensation in the area to emerge.
This happens because of the pH difference (scale used to measure how acidic, neutral or basic a solution is) between soap or perfume and tears. When in contact with the eyes, these products (acidic or basic) react with the tear (almost neutral) and irritation arises.
The same goes for the most common types of shampoo – if they tend to irritate your eyes, go for the children's versions, which have a pH closer to that of tears.
