During the American Civil War, a panel of the lives of four sisters whose mother is the head of the family, as their father is fighting with the troops. The financial situation of the family is precarious. They are helped by a wealthy neighbor and his tutor. Despite this, there are limits in these difficult times. The guardian marries one of the sisters, but the neighbor is rejected by another, who decides to leave for New York alone. However, he returns when his sister, who had already been seriously ill, takes a frightening turn for the worse.
