The history of dengue in Brazil and worldwide
Since the end of the 18th century, epidemics with descriptions similar to that of dengue were recorded in North America and Asia. However, the name, meaning “sudden cramp caused by evil spirits”, was only used for the first time in 1827 during an outbreak of the disease in the Caribbean.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is also a vector of the urban yellow fever virus, is believed to have arrived in Brazil during the colonial period. The first cases date back to 1846. Due to strong muscle and joint pain, the disease here received the popular name of “break-bone fever”.
