Also known as the red-crested tanager, horned tanager, red-crested dancer and king tanager, the little soldier is a bird of about 15 cm, the largest of the Pripidae family, found in the Brazilian savannah and wetlands, in northeastern Paraguay and in a small stretch of border in northeastern Bolivia.
The little soldier (Antilophia galeata) presents sexual dimorphism, that is, males and females are very different. The male has black plumage and a showy red tuft on top of the head. It is this topknot, similar to a Roman helmet, that inspired its popular name. The female is olive green, as are the puppies. Young males can take up to three years to display adult plumage.
It vigorously defends its territory, with singing and chasing trespassers. Females lay two eggs in a basket-shaped nest.
The little soldier lives in regions of buritizais, forests of the Pantanal lowlands, swampy forests, gallery forests and capões. It feeds on fruits and insects. It plays an important role in seed dispersal, especially in the cerrado. Its song is cheerful and attractive, composed of five parts.
