How does the presence sensor work?

You approach the entrance of a building and, suddenly, the door opens by itself. It takes courage to face a dark corridor and, when you take the first step, the lights come on. Behind situations like this is the presence sensor, a device that uses detection technology!

The presence sensor has the function of perceiving, that is, detecting a certain type of energy and its variation in the environment. The most used equipment works by detecting infrared radiation. We can notice its action in many places: in malls, in banks, in some buildings and stores.

Infrared radiation – which are electromagnetic waves – is emitted by heat sources. That includes bonfires, as you might have thought, but also me, you, the neighbor's dog... When a person enters an environment monitored by such a sensor, its presence is detected by causing a variation of this energy in the place.

When we approach a door or a place where there is a lamp connected to sensors, the heat emitted by our body is interpreted by the sensor as an electrical signal. He is the one who activates the lamp and keeps it lit as long as there are people moving or occupying the environment. The sensor can also trigger an alarm or cause a door to open, depending on the device it is attached to.

The infrared presence sensor still has a lens that divides the environment into regions. This means that, in addition to detecting the infrared radiation emitted by heat sources, it also monitors variations in this energy in many parts of the same location. Now, if people are not very close to the sensor, they will probably not be detected, as the sensitivity of the device decreases with distance.
