The bird is common on the edges of lakes, swamps, flooded fields and mangroves. It occurs in almost all of Brazil and also from Mexico to Argentina. It feeds on insects, snails and mainly fish, which it captures in shallow waters close to the edge.

The couple of the species jointly builds the nest, in the form of a platform. The female lays one or two eggs and the incubation period lasts between 35 and 40 days.
