The fact that Paraty was geographically and economically isolated from the rest of the country in the period from 1870 to 1950 made the preservation of some old customs, especially the commemorations of the great dates of the Catholicism. During religious festivals, the city is decorated with little flags, the windows of the houses are decorated with vases of flowers and colorful towels, and the churches are decorated with images that are normally kept. Regardless of the religious sense, being in Paraty during religious festivities is to witness some of the richest cultural events in the country.
