He lives in the Central Plateau, more specifically in the capital of Brazil, in lakes that form once a year, only during the rainy season, between January and August. Then those stretches of water dry up and it disappears, but it leaves a trail that almost no one notices. A year later, it reappears, as if by magic. No, this is not another Brazilian legend. It is the pirá-brasilia, the so-called annual fish in the federal capital.
But how does this little marine animal reappear? Does it spring from the earth? Or does it fall from the sky in the rain? None of that! When the rains stop, the swamps begin to dry up in the region and the pirá-brasilia, which only exists in the Federal District, ends up dying. At this point, something quite interesting happens: before they take their last breath, these animals bury their eggs in the ground, and they remain there, waiting for the next rainy season. The eggs, which were already buried in dry land, after a year, in the presence of water, hatch and the fingerlings – as newborn fish are called – quickly develop. Here is a new batch of pirá-brasilia!
Males and females have very different characteristics. Females are light brown, with one or two black spots in the middle of the body and have transparent fins. Males are red, with metallic blue bands near the head and have spots of the same color on the rest of the body and fins.
Pira-brasilia's menu is quite varied: it eats everything from small insects to vegetables, including some algae.
The forests where the temporary lakes where the pirá-brasilia live are under threat. Therefore, this fish is also at risk of disappearing forever. Therefore, it is necessary to preserve the environment if we are to continue enjoying the beauty and curiosities of this mysterious species, which only appears every year.
