It is a benign disorder that occurs in the first of six nocturnal passages from deeper to more shallow sleep. It is caused by a cerebral arrhythmia, usually hereditary, and it happens most often in children aged three to ten years. Motor functions awaken while consciousness remains asleep. The sleepwalker moves but doesn't know what's going on.
