Saci's Day

Did you know that here in Brazil, on October 31st, instead of witches, pumpkins and “pranks”, characteristic of Halloween, we celebrate Saci's Day? With a red cap, one leg and a pipe in his mouth, Saci is famous for making fun of everyone. His favorite antics are: scaring travelers, hiding objects and tying horses' manes.

Saci's story has two versions. The first says that the boy was born with the indigenous people and was a protector of the forests. No one leg or a pipe. The story was incorporated by the Africans who arrived in Brazil at the beginning of colonization and the legend gave new clothes to the character and the boy became the saci we know. In literature, Monteiro Lobato was the first to rescue the myth with the gang from Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo.
