Shopee and Shein: the tax amount will now be displayed in the payment step

According to information obtained by interlocutors from the Ministry of Finance and shared by journalist Ana Flor, GloboNews commentator, the import tax of 60% will be detailed in the total value of the purchase made at Shein or at Shopee.

This week, the Federal Revenue began presenting its “compliance program” for these companies, offering the possibility of joining. This program aims to ensure compliance with Brazilian legislation, including the collection of taxes, while seeking to facilitate the sale of the product.

According to the new measures announced by the Federal Government, companies involved in international trade will be responsible for completing an advance declaration, including carriers. This initiative aims to streamline customs procedures and facilitate the entry of goods into Brazil.

Federal Government and the intention to tax Shein and Shopee

One of the significant changes is the end of the import tax exemption for purchases made by individuals worth up to US$ 50 (about R$ 250, according to current quotations). This amendment aims to ensure the correct collection of taxes and promote greater equity in the market.

In April, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, declared that some Chinese trading companies are engaging in “unfair competition” practices by circumventing import. These companies have used methods that violate established rules, thus harming Brazilian companies.

However, shortly thereafter, the government backtracked on the decision to end the tax exemption for import for purchases of up to US$ 50 made by individuals and chose to intensify the oversight.

The main reason for this intensification, according to the government, was to avoid fraud, since some foreign companies took advantage of this rule to not pay import tariffs due.

Rates, therefore, were announced at 60% of the total purchase amount, both at Shein and Shopee.
