The Mata Nacional do Buçaco, in Portugal, will receive a forest of around one hundred trees in honor of South African leader Nelson Mandela (1918-2013). The public presentation of the place will take place on July 18, the tenth day of Mandela Day, which honors the leader born on that date.
Named Bosque Madiba (the South African leader's nickname), the initiative will be important because the region had many of its trees felled after being hit by Hurricane Leslie in October 2018.
Each of the hundred trees will be used to tell a historical moment in Mandela's life and his struggle for racial equality. In addition, the forest will have a giant sculpture of the honoree, which will be made of natural materials on the ground and can be seen from above.
A series of other initiatives associated with the forest are also being developed, such as an education and citizenship program called O Legado de Mandela, which will be applied in schools for the 2019 and 2020 school year, and the Parque POP project (Pedalar Operational Program), which will teach children to ride bicycle.
The opening of the forest is scheduled for July 18, 2020, on the next Mandela Day.
