“Inaugurated” in 1972, the Blue Line of the São Paulo subway would take even more than two years to work
On September 9, 1972, a siren announced a major change in the routine of São Paulo residents. Activated by President Emílio Garrastazu Médici, the bell made operator Antonio Lazarini put the first subway in Brazil into operation in front of the public.
The ceremony only served to mark the technological revolution in the country's transport system, in the midst of the military regime. The subway only started to transport passengers on September 14, 1974, between the neighborhoods of Jabaquara and Vila Mariana, six years after the beginning of the works.
In 1975, the Blue Line reached Santana: it was 16.7 kilometers long and had 20 stations. At the time, around 2,858 people were transported per day. Today about 4.5 million circulate through 84 stations.
