At the end of his life, stricken by pulmonary emphysema, Adoniran Barbosa was forced to frequent the bohemian less. The composer of hits such as Saudosa Maloca and Trem das Onze then began to develop a skill he had already had since he was a child, but which he had neglected for decades: building toys. He started making wooden trains, wire bicycles, carousels out of old cans.
Everything was done at his home in Cidade Ademar, south of São Paulo, the place where he took refuge in the last years of his life.
“Adoniran liked to play and was extremely skilled with his hands. With more time to stay at home, he built a workshop and was able to invent toys”, say biographers Juliana Lins and André Diniz.
Shortly thereafter, however, he dropped the activity. In a 1981 interview, he confessed that he no longer had the heart to make toys. In his peculiar mixture of melancholy and good humor, he stated: “They say that is mental hygiene. I call mentally weak hygiene”.
