Batches of ice cream recalled for containing carcinogenic substance

According to Anvisa's statement, these are products sold in 415g (473ml) packaging, distributed to establishments resellers in bulk packaging of 7.7kg (9.46l), with an expiration date between July 7, 2022 and July 18, 2023.

Voluntary recall is happening on a global scale, because of the presence of the substance 2-chloroethanol (2-CE), found in the vanilla flavor of ice cream imported from France. In this sense, it is important to point out that there are no restrictions on the sale and consumption of other Häagen-Dazs ice cream flavors.

dangerous substance

2-CE is related to the compound ethylene oxide (ETO), which has a potentially mutagenic effect, that is, it can cause changes (mutations) capable of causing damage to human cells.

ETO is also genotoxic, which means it can cause changes in genetic material. In addition, ETO is classified as a substance with carcinogenic properties, that is, it can cause cancer.

Company claims that amounts of carcinogenic substance in ice cream is minimal

The company stated, through a note, that the amounts of the substance found in the ice creams are low, but the necessary steps to replace the affected ingredients have already been sockets.

The brand reinforces that it does not use ethylene oxide in any of its manufacturing processes. products and which, in addition, follows safety standards, in accordance with the legislation of each market where it operates.

Guidance given by Anvisa

According to the regulatory agency, there are no acceptable residual limits for this substance in food. There are also no tolerable limits under the legislation on limits of contaminants in food that is currently in force in Brazil.

Thus, Anvisa recommends that consumers who purchased Häagen-Dazs vanilla flavored ice cream with validity between the respective dates mentioned do not consume the product, but keep the packaging and contact the company General Mills.
