It is the largest member of the Canidae family (the same as dogs and foxes) in South America. Its scientific name is Chrysocyon brachyurus
, which means "short-tailed golden dog". The nickname “guará” comes from the Tupi language, “down fur”, because it does not have an underlayer in the coat on the body.It can reach between 95 and 115 cm in body length, from 35 to 50 cm in the tail and 90 cm in height at the withers. It weighs between 20 and 36 kg, with no significant differences between males and females.
[…] Despite being called a wolf, he has a different genetics from the other members of the family. It is considered as the only living species belonging to the group, so it is not classified as a “true” wolf, nor a dog, fox, coyote and jackal. The closest relatives of maned wolves on the evolutionary scale are the vinegar dogs (Speothos venaticus), although they are morphologically very different from each other.
The body color varies from golden-red to orange, and the hair on the mane, paws and muzzle are black. It has a whitish tuft at the tip of the tail, a characteristic already present in puppies since they are born. It also has a white patch under its throat. Long hairs along the body, especially on the back of the neck, form a type of mane, which is erectile, often used to increase your profile when you feel threatened or to show off. It has a slender body, in addition to long and thin legs, probably an adaptation because of moving in open areas, covered by tall grass.
Its vocalization is very characteristic and is called “aulido”. More studies are needed, but it seems that it vocalizes more frequently at certain times of the year, which may be related to the reproductive period. Howls echo over long distances and are often answered by another wolf […]
