Ulysses Guimarães was a very important deputy for the history of Brazilian democracy. Ulysses Guimarães was a tireless defender in the struggle for democracy and freedom. He was born on October 16, 1916, and as a young man dreamed of being an artist. He studied piano. He was a poet awarded by the Academia Paulista de Letras as a student and wrote several books. He was vice president of the National Student Union (UNE).
Ulysses was also a professor, lawyer and even president of a football club! Later, he embraced another dream: to be a politician.
He was the longest-serving congressman at the head of the Federal Legislature, for more than four decades. He won 11 elections in a row for federal deputy! He served as President of the Chamber of Deputies three times.
From an early age, Ulysses showed talent as a speaker. Every time he came up with an idea, wherever he was, he wrote it down on slips of paper, which he carried in his jacket pockets. From these notes came documents, speeches and phrases that today occupy a prominent place in Brazilian history. […]
