Measles is caused by a virus of the genus Morbillivirus, easily transmitted by secretions from the airways, such as droplets that are eliminated along with sneezing and coughing. Those who are infected can transmit the disease even before the onset of the first symptoms and up to four days after red and rough patches appear on the skin.
In addition to the marks, which begin to appear on the face and increase to the feet, measles causes: fever, cough, conjunctivitis, runny nose, lack of appetite, and white patches on the inside of the cheeks. In more severe cases, it can affect the lungs, ears and nervous system.
A doctor's analysis of the patient and blood tests confirm the problem. There is no remedy to stop the virus. Treatment usually includes rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and medication for fever.
The only prevention against measles is the vaccine, known as MMR – it also acts to prevent mumps and rubella. There are two doses taken during childhood. You and your family must stay connected!
