Have you ever imagined finding a lost city in the middle of the ocean? This was one of the discoveries made by marine life researchers. Located in the central region of the Atlantic Ocean, the place known as the “lost city” is home to an impressive number of animals and can reach up to 60 meters in height.

The Atlantic area has been known to scientists since the 2000s. It is located more than 700 meters deep and is called the Lost City Hydrothermal Field. This environment is the oldest in the history of the ocean in question.
According to the researchers, the communities present in the Lost City can survive even without the presence of oxygen. thanks to the ability of sea water to be able to feed the microbial population only with the hydrocarbons present there.
In the expedition carried out with the aid of remotely operated marine vehicles, it was possible to see the walls and columns of the place. They can reach up to 60 meters in height and even form small piles.
The upper part of this city expels hot gases, responsible for maintaining the life of several snails and crustaceans. In addition, it is home to other animals, such as crabs, shrimp and even eels. For this reason, although the site is considered extreme, there is diversity of life and must be preserved with care.
There are certainly other places known as hydrothermal fields, but this is the only one found so far.
It manages to survive without sunlight and still provide food from hydrocarbons produced by chemical reactions at the bottom of the sea. For this reason, microbiologist William Brazelton calls the Lost City also Mars in the past, since life can arise in low-oxygen environments like this one.
The specialists' concern is now different. Poland is allowed to explore the sea in this exact region, that is, this measure could destroy this form of marine life. In this way, they ask for the Lost City to be listed as a World Heritage Site to have its existence protected.
