When people ask how I managed to go out with Carla, I say it was because of Aldemir Martins, the famous painter.
I was calm, studying. Swear! Around 3pm the phone rang. It was her, the neighbor of house 3. Her mother died about four years ago. Her father is super jealous, he never lets her out of the house.
– Hi, Rodrigo… Do you have a big tabby cat?
- Have. His name is Ice Cream.
- Ice cream?
– When we touch it, it melts.
– He fights with my cat, Tati. It has happened several times. I think it's jealousy.
– From another cat?
- No. From a picture. A painting. From Aldemir Martins.
Ten minutes later I was in her living room. Just the two of us.
“You'll see,” she said.
– It's always at the same time. Have you ever heard of Aldemir Martins?
- Already. He is a famous painter as hell. He lives here in São Paulo.
– Lived. He died a short time ago. My mother was in love with his painting. He illustrated books, magazines, newspapers… He painted cangaceiros, roosters, birds, fish…
- I know. She even drew mayonnaise and wine labels…
- My mother bought everything she could. We ate on plates designed by him, there were sheets, rugs, bathroom curtains…
Carla led me to a corner of the room. On top of an imitation fireplace, there was a canvas by Aldemir Martins, small, with a drawing of a cat. A fat cat, red and blue, a huge muzzle showing claws, seductive, calm, hypnotic green eyes.
– My mother loved this painting.
Then she pulled me behind a heavy curtain, which covered the window that overlooked the garden.
Tati entered the room. She jumped to the edge of the fake fireplace and stopped in front of the painting, looking at the painted cat. We stayed like this for about 20 minutes, hidden, silent. Until he showed up. The old ice cream. The coolest cat on the block. She came waving, passed between the furniture, stopped in front of the fireplace, looked up and didn't like what she saw.
Carla took my arm.
Ice cream jumped over the edge.
Cat fight is faster than video games. Tati jumped through an open window and fled into the garden, with Ice Cream behind.
– My mother used to say that an artist is capable of recreating life. If God exists, surely he is an artist. But I think you'll have to lock the Ice Cream at home, Rodrigo.
I didn't like that.
– No, Carla. We find another way. For me, people, animals, anything that moves… must have freedom. You must have an open window.
– But the Ice Cream is kinda wild…
- That. That's how I like him. I'm kind of wild too. Do you know what I do? I eat the whole tomato. I don't wait for my mom to leave and put it on the salad!
She laughed. I don't know where I got this tomato story. Then I got carried away, and I was going to give more examples of how wild I was, but the curtain suddenly opened and her father appeared.
The guy was nervous, he almost called the police, but then we explained, he regretted it and ended up even letting his daughter go out with me. Carla and I are dating. Interest.
