Maracatu Rural, also known as Maracatu de Baque Solto, de Trombone or de Orquestra, is today one of the most interesting artistic manifestations of the Pernambuco carnival. The union of other popular artistic expressions (coming from the interior) such as reisado, sea horse, bumba meu boi, caboclinhos, among others, built Maracatu Rural over time. This mixture is related to the fact that in the first decades of the 20th century, with the sugar crisis, many mills closed and workers were forced to migrate to large urban centers and so this great combination of rhythms became part of the areas in which rural workers lived.
Perhaps the main figure – and the one that draws the most attention – is the “Caboclo de Lança”. With his colorful clothes and his spear decorated with silk ribbons, Caboclo de Lança presents himself as a true guardian of the procession. Today, he is considered one of the symbols of the Pernambuco carnival.
