The marathon has been present at the Olympic Games since Athens, in 1896. It is a competition that demands a lot from the athlete and requires enormous endurance. The rule is simple, but the challenge is not easy: the athlete who first completes the distance of 42.195 meters takes the gold. The path to success largely involves the runner's ability to control his own pace – in addition, of course, to overcoming opponents. The last two editions of the Olympic Games set new records for the marathon. In Beijing 2008, in the men's race, the Kenyan Samuel Kamau Wanjiru covered the course in 2h06min32s.
