Baroque architecture reminiscent of the colonial style of the state's gold mining period in the 18th century, São João del-Rei is a city that exudes art, culture and history.
Located in a predominantly mountainous region, Campos das Vertentes, the municipality is 185 km from the capital of Minas Gerais.
Hometown of the former president who didn't even take office, Tancredo Neves, São João del-Rei is the biggest 18th century city in the state of Minas Gerais and offers a vast biography to be explored by the tourist.
Its centuries-old churches bring the best of Minas Gerais baroque through rich and outlined golden altars. The Cathedral Basilica Nossa Senhora do Pilar stands out among them, built in 1721.
In addition to the President Tancredo Neves Memorial, the city has several museums and various manifestations cultural events that, held in the streets, between bridges and fountains, transport the tourist on a trip to the past.
The Railway Station is the culmination of the tour in São João which, through a legitimate Maria Fumaça, promotes tourist trips to neighboring Tiradentes.
With an imposing ecological diversity marked by the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado, São João del-Rei offers to its visitors direct contact with nature full of beautiful landscapes, mountains, waterfalls and fauna diverse.
The city's commemorative calendar is full of cultural and religious events, and, among the most famous, Holy Week and the Winter Festival (Cultural Winter), in addition to the carnival.
