NAME:

THE DONKEY AND THE IMAGE

A holy image was being carried into the temple. She was placed on a donkey adorned with garlands and beautiful ornaments, and a great procession of priests and pages followed her through the streets. As the donkey walked, people bowed their heads in reverence or fell to their knees, and the donkey thought that the honor was being done to himself.

With his head full of this silly idea, he was so filled with pride and vanity that he stopped and started braying loudly. But in the middle of his song, the man leading the donkey guessed what the animal was thinking and started to fight with him.

- How stupid you are! – he shouted – The honor is not for you, but for the image you carry.
