Created in 1936 by the then Director of Culture of São Paulo, writer Mário de Andrade, this is the first children's library in Brazil. The site has around 35 thousand items in the collection – among them, mangas, comics, children's books and movies. In addition, it brings together 11,000 items by Monteiro Lobato, including letters, photographs, clothes and unusual items such as a piece of the writer's rib.
The library also created the Bloco das Emílias e dos Viscondes, the first carnival block of children in the city, which comes out through the surroundings of the library with puppets representing characters from the Sítio do Picapau Amarelo – Lobato's great work – on paper mache.
The space also has the exhibition “The World of Wonders of Monteiro Lobato”, where children enter a giant book and are welcomed by the characters on the site, where they can interact with them. Children's theater plays and storytelling are also part of the program.
