Why do insects have skeletons outside their bodies?

All insects have an exoskeleton, which is made of chitin, a substance that performs a function similar to that of keratin, which forms our nails and hair. And it is being exchanged throughout the life of the animal. This happens because the exoskeleton doesn't stretch, it doesn't grow like our bones do. When the insect grows, the exoskeleton becomes tight. Then, it breaks and is replaced by another, looser one, which is already being formed underneath the first one.
