Some say the Egyptians were the first to mix flour and water to form a pizza-like dough 5,000 years ago. Others say that it was the Greeks, later on, following more or less the same recipe. But the pizza only gained coverage when it reached Etruria, a peninsula in Italy. The poorest covered it with oil and spices. Those who could also put cheese, sausage or eggs. And little by little, the recipe started to be made with the most different toppings. One of the most famous is the margherita, created in 1889 by the Italian baker Raffaele Espósito. To honor Queen Margherita, he used ingredients in the colors of the Italian flag: tomato (red), cheese (white) and basil (green).
