This book has no history. And, for that very reason, maybe there are many. zoo, by the Spanish Jesús Gabán, crowds animals to each pair of pages. There are animals with fur, which look plush. There are the coatis and the panda bear, for example. There are those with a hard shell. Like armadillo, crab and rhino horn. There are also those with long legs, such as the flamingo, the heron and the spoonbill. Each group is on a page.
But one thing doesn't change. On every page, a boy observes everything from afar. Sometimes he almost hides. And it's really fun looking where he is. In this game, the illustrations in ink and watercolor by Jesús reveal many other things. Subtleties like the weeping eyes on the wings of butterflies. The baby birds on top of cacti. And the slug on the turtle's nose, which almost looks like a dinosaur. The book that lets you tell the story you see there, surprises you with the beauty of the illustrations. Delicate, with a dose of magical surrealism and deliciously composed. It's worth spending time watching each page.
