In 1946, the first direct elections for president would be held after the years of Getúlio Vargas' “Estado Novo”. The candidate of the PTB/PSD alliance, Eurico Gaspar Dutra, won relatively easily. But the title of greatest originality in the campaign went to the supporters of the defeated candidate, Eduardo Gomes (of the UDN).
Air Force Brigadier, looking like a heartthrob, Eduardo Gomes had enthusiastic support. To do the “body-to-body” with the electorate, women from society took to the streets calling on women to vote for Gomes, with the slogan: “Vote for the Brigadier. He's handsome and single.” Unsatisfied, they still promoted lunches and teas, in which they served an irresistible sweet covered with granulated chocolate. Which they named, of course, Brigadier.
