How and why separate the trash?

Recycling significantly reduces the impact on the environment: it reduces the removal of raw materials from nature, generates savings in water and energy and reduces the inappropriate disposal of waste. In addition, it is a source of income for waste pickers.

Preserving the environment starts with small daily actions, which make all the difference. One of the most important is waste recycling. The advantages of separating household waste are becoming more and more evident. In addition to alleviating dumps and landfills, only tailings (waste residues) reach them that cannot be reusable), much of the solid waste generated at home can be reused. Recycling saves natural resources and generates income for garbage collectors, part of the population that depends on discarded solid waste to survive.
According to the latest National Basic Sanitation survey by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), around 180 thousand tons of solid waste are collected daily in Brazil. The tailings result from activities of urban, industrial, health services, rural, special or differentiated origin. These materials generated in these activities are potentially raw materials and/or inputs for the production of new products or energy sources.
More than half of this waste is thrown, without any treatment, in open dumps. As a result, the economic loss exceeds R$ 8 billion annually. At the moment, only 18% of Brazilian cities have a selective collection service. By separating the waste, the first steps are being taken towards its proper disposal. With separation it is possible: reuse; the recycling; the best added value to the material to be recycled; the best working conditions for recyclable material collectors or classifiers; composting; less demand from nature; the increase in the lifespan of landfills and less environmental impact when the tailings are disposed of.
