4 cleaning habits you need to break to be happier

What are the types of parenting?

The four main parenting styles used in child psychology today – permissive, participative, neglectful and authoritative – are based on the work of developmental psychologist Diana Baumrind, as well as Eleanor McCorby and John A. Martin, both researchers at Stanford University.

Each parenting style has a different effect on a child's behavior and can be identified by certain characteristics. So, check out what these types are and their advantages below.

Permissive

This type of parent is more likely to take on a “friend” role with their child rather than seeming like a real parent. He prefers to avoid conflict and often accepts children's requests at the first sign of distress. Some of its features are as follows:

  • Communicates openly, often letting young people decide for themselves instead of guiding them;
  • Rules and expectations are not defined or are rarely enforced;
  • Often goes to great lengths to keep children happy. Sometimes sacrificing your desires.

Participative

Participating parents care for, support, and often meet their children's needs. They guide children in teaching values and reasoning through open and honest discussions. See how they act:

  • Create clear rules and expectations for your children while practicing flexibility and understanding.
  • Communicate frequently, listen and consider children's thoughts, feelings and opinions;
  • Let the natural consequences happen (for example, a young person failing a test), but use this to help your child learn.

Negligent

This disengaged parenting is characterized by a sense of apathy and indifference. Neglectful parents have limited involvement with their children and rarely enforce the rules. They can also be seen as apathetic and aloof. Some of its features are these:

  • They let children fend for themselves, perhaps because they are indifferent to their needs, are not involved, or are overwhelmed by other things;
  • They don't give as much affection, attention or guidance to their children;
  • They have difficulty with their own self-esteem and, therefore, find it difficult to have more intimate relationships.

Authoritarian

This rigid parenting style uses discipline, called "tough love," to gain complete control. It's those more authoritarian parents who usually ′′ talk ′′ to children without listening to their side of the situation. See exactly what they usually do:

  • They usually impose rules without considering what their children will think or how it will affect their feelings and behavior;
  • Uses the shallow justification of “why not” or “because I want to” to deprive you of doing something;
  • The communication between both is direct and considered unidirectional, only from parent to child.

What is the best parenting style?

Research shows that parents engaged in the participative style are more likely to raise children independent, self-reliant and socially competent, it is therefore considered the best parenting option to be managed.

Although the children of parents of this model are not immune to problems, the relational and psychological characteristics of most of the problems are present in children of parents who adopt strictly authoritarian, permissive or disengaged.

Learn how to change your parenting style

the most parentssuccessfulknow when to change their style depending on the situation. For example: a subject who is participative may want to be more forgiving when his child is sick, as he will continue to provide more affection and friendship. In addition, you will give up some control.

Forgiving parents can be more restrictive if their child's safety is at risk, such as when crossing busy streets. At the end of the day, use your best judgment and remember that the parenting style that works best for your family at the moment is the style you should be using. Know how to recognize what is needed.
