The purchase of Twitter by Elon Musk was made official on Monday and, since then, he has been firing several tweets about the future of the social network. In addition, the billionaire also took the opportunity to clarify his position regarding freedom of expression, claiming that he is against any type of censorship that goes far beyond the law. Among the most commented subjects of the week, the owner of Tesla says that “The extreme reaction of those who fear freedom of expression says it all. By "free speech" I simply mean what is in accordance with the law. I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law. If people want less freedom of expression, they will ask the government to pass laws to that effect. Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people.”
It should be noted that legislation for “freedom of expression” and “censorship” are different in each country. Given that Twitter is a global service, it will have to follow the idea as “defined” by the laws of each country, at least that's what Musk's definition implies.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that the law of many countries may not necessarily prohibit certain types of hate speech or make it illegal. So how Twitter plans to deal with 'censorship' now that Musk is in charge remains unclear, especially with regards to moderating existing content.
As much as the previous statements have already caused different reactions, Elon Musk has become involved in yet another controversy. The owner of SpaceX responded to a tweet that spoke about Twitter's current legal chief, Vijaya Gadde.
In this tweet was a screenshot of Gadde apparently crying in a meeting following the billionaire's takeover of the company. The post that read: “Vijaya Gadde, the leading advocate of Twitter censorship who famously lit up the world on podcast by Joe Rogan and censored Hunter Biden's notebook story, is very upset about Elon's takeover Musk.”
Then, Musk responded by saying that "suspending the Twitter account of a major news outlet for publishing a true story was obviously inappropriate." Such a statement was in reference to Twitter suspending the New York Post account after publishing stories about Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden. The account was suspended because Twitter said the article in question was based on the hacked materials policy.
