Amapá: Museu do Sacaca to receive humpback whale bones

The Museu do Sacaca, in Macapá, Amapá, will receive a new exhibit: the bone of a humpback whale.

The animal's bones are buried in an area of the institution, in Fazendinha, in the south of the capital, and will undergo cleaning before being sent to the museum.

The whale was found dead on December 15 of last year, on Ilha Vitória, in the Bailique Archipelago. The bones were buried so that there was the natural decomposition process of the existing fat in parts of the bone.

The removal of the animal's remains began this week and the work is meticulous so that there is no damage to the skeleton.

First, the smaller bones are unearthed, which will be washed with detergents and bleach. Then it is the turn of the animal's larger bones, ribs and head, which will go through the same cleaning process.

Archaeologists from the Amapá Scientific and Technological Research Institute hope to complete all the work by the end of the year.

The institute is also looking for resources to assemble the skeleton, as according to archaeologists, only one person in the entire country has this knowledge.

If all goes well, the opening of the exhibition will be in the first half of next year.
