Have you ever received a suspicious call from a strange number with area code from another location? In general, these are calls that “drop” as soon as they are answered. In this case, there are two options: no one calls you again or another strange number tries again. Unfortunately, the second hypothesis is the most common.

These cases become even more frequent when the person has some debt. Collections offices can make dozens of calls a day, without any resulting in effective service.
However, excessive calling can be more than just a nuisance. They can characterize a “legal excess”, since they can infringe the rights of the citizen who receives them.
In general, these calls are made by robots and are hired by telemarketing agencies. In other words, they are computer programs that trigger telephone messages.
However, it is not only in Brazil that this occurs. In 2019, there were 60 billion such calls registered in the United States. The data comes from the call blocking company YouMail.
Although there is no specific law on the subject, some measures can be taken.
People who feel uncomfortable and want to block these messages should do the following.
Access your state's Procon website and search for call blocking. At Procon de São Paulo, for example, the protocol to follow is as follows:
– Access the page on the blocking of the Procon-SP website;
– Click on “Register your phone here”;
– Fill in the consumer registration form, with information such as Name, address, CPF, etc.;
– Click on “Register”;
– A notice will appear saying that you must wait 30 days for your number to be blocked. Click on “I am aware”;
The step-by-step was also published on the fintech Nubank blog. The objective is to guide Brazilian consumers about the procedure.
The 30 days required to block the call are required by Law No. 13,226. Before that period it will still be possible to receive calls.
After 30 days, if you continue to receive unwanted calls, you can go to the same page to report them. The process may have some changes in each state, but it follows the same logic.
