The Cerrado is the second largest biome in South America, second only to the Amazon! It has already occupied an area of 2,036,448 km2, around 22% of the national territory. It covers the states of Bahia, Federal District, Goiás, Tocantins, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Piauí, Rondônia, São Paulo and parts of Amapá, Amazonas and Roraima.
It is considered the 'water tank of Brazil': it contains the springs of the three largest hydrographic basins in South America (Amazonas/Tocantins, São Francisco and Prata).
That much water can only mean a lot of life. And that is exactly what is seen in the Cerrado: it is considered the richest savanna in the world, with 11,627 species of native plants already catalogued. The fauna is also very varied: there are about 199 species of mammals, 837 of birds, 1200 of fish, 180 of reptiles and 150 of amphibians. Furthermore, according to recent estimates, it is home to 13% of butterflies, 35% of bees and 23% of termites in the tropics.
The Cerrado landscapes range from the cerradão (with tall trees), through the most common cerrado in Central Brazil (with short and sparse trees), to the campo cerrado (with few trees).
It is a biome typical of tropical regions and has two distinct seasons: dry winter and rainy summer. During the drought, by the way, fauna and flora suffer a lot from fires, which spread quickly and cause great devastation.
After the Atlantic Forest, the Cerrado is the Brazilian biome that has suffered the most alterations due to human occupation. Much of its territory was occupied by fields for raising beef cattle and planting grain for export (such as soybeans). The original vegetation has been cleared for charcoal production. Animals are also at risk: at least 137 species could go extinct.
Despite being such an important and threatened biome, the Cerrado has only 8.21% of its territory protected by conservation units.
September 11 is Cerrado Day. It's a day to celebrate the richness of one of our main biomes. To rethink consumption habits that deplete nature. And to demand and demand protective measures from the competent authorities.
