Rio is so far away – Letters to Fernando Sabino

Otto Lara Resende

the river is so far

Friends since their youth in Belo Horizonte, Otto and the writer, columnist and editor Fernando Sabino (1923-2004) maintained an epistolary connection like few others in our literature. It is by all accounts a feat at a time when there were no personal computers (but typewriters) and e-mail (it was necessary to walk to the post office) in this vast exchange between the two authors over time and various cities.

This unprecedented volume brings Otto's letters to Sabino over more than thirty years of solid friendship – which would last until the death of the first, in the early 1990s. Sent from places like Rio de Janeiro, Brussels and Lisbon (in these last two cities Otto would live as a cultural attaché), the letters bring the point of a very unique view of an author on the most diverse aspects of life: from loves to literature, from changes in customs to the politics of the Brazil.

In these letters written with a very light hand and highly literary diction, appears a cast of characters who would decide the direction of Brazil in the most diverse fields, from literature to politics, from popular music to finance. Guimarães Rosa, Nelson Rodrigues, Jânio Quadros, San Thiago Dantas, Chico Buarque and João Goulart, among many others, appear as protagonists, interlocutors or even in sublime (humorous or loving) evocations of an author who thus defined his taste for writing so many letters: “It's not graphomania. It's civility”.
