Read this excerpt from the book “Serafina and the child who works” and then answer the questions:
Playing in the street was a natural thing until some time ago. There weren't so many people, so many cars, the cities were quiet. The kids played marbles, hopscotch, jumped rope. Today, vehicles have become the owners of the streets, families in large cities have gone to live in buildings and, even in remote villages, the street is no longer a place for children. The streets became dangerous. Parents look for enclosed areas for their children to play.
Poor kids aren't even that lucky. Parents, afraid of the streets and having nowhere to leave their children, soon put them to work. This is also because the family needs the money their children bring home.
In the fields, from an early age, children help their parents to plant and harvest. As parents did not study, many of them find it more difficult to go to school, as parents do not always think it is important to have an education. And when they do, the school is far away. Or else there is no school in the region. These children end up growing up without education. They work from an early age and are subject to tinkering with poison, taking snake bites or facing the toughest tasks – such as the ovens for making charcoal, where the air is unbreathable. In cities, many teenagers have to work during the day and study at night. By doing this, they all jeopardize their future, because at night, tired, they cannot learn properly.
This happens in Brazil and in many other countries around the world, unfortunately.
Of course, the vast majority of parents know that their children have the right to study and play, to have medical assistance, correct nutrition, and good education. It is not out of malice that they put their children to work. It's out of necessity.
