Imagine the following scenario: you're super excited having some friends over for an intimate dinner, when you finally serve the main course – a super special recipe of yours for a grilled chicken in sauce, the one you always get compliments. The whole table is full of praise, in fact almost, because you hear someone say in a loud and clear tone: “the chicken is good, but I would use another ingredient that would be better”.
That is one rude habit known as 'ICE'.

If you have already gone through something like this, or even made a comment of this level, know that the North Americans have already named this practice “ICE”, invidious comparison eating (something like envious food comparison). This can be seen as the worst habit passive-aggressive during a dinner.
On that occasion, someone indirectly says that the food that was served is less/worse, describing the reasons why another version is “bigger”/better, and this other version is usually done by whoever is suggesting.
The comment can happen at any group meal, but it's even more uncomfortable when it happens at an intimate gathering, right in front of the person who cooked the dish with so much care and attention.
In this way, those who make these comments usually do so to place themselves as superior to the current cook. This overlap can be both in the financial aspect, saying that you can buy a more expensive product for preparing the dish, or saying that he simply has more techniques and knowledge of cooking, which is not cool in no case.
So, if you have any criticism or suggestion about the dinner served, the tip is quite simple: just call the cook for a gastronomic conversation, particular and relaxed preference, not trying to put yourself above or below it, but simply sharing tips and getting some guidance also.
That way, you can teach and even learn some things without making the event embarrassing.
