In order for us to break the habit of constantly postponing important tasks, it is essential to understand what our internal mechanisms are that make us keep putting it off.
In other words, take time to reflect on yourself, your attitudes, and what makes it difficult for you to take action. Based on this knowledge, it will be easier to align yourself with the strategies needed to guide your actions and be able to do things differently.
Knowing where you want to go is key to focusing and therefore avoiding procrastination. In this way, with well-defined goals, decision-making and selection of what is a priority becomes easier. With the plans developed and the objective in focus, other problems are avoided, such as anguish and the feeling of incapacity and stagnation.
Clearly defining goals is key, but the secret to achieving them lies in our inner world and our emotions, so connect the emotional dynamics to each goal.
Visualize yourself accomplishing your goal and notice the emotions it stirs in you. When you do, allow yourself, in that moment, to get caught up in that emotion and throw yourself into the action, produce!
Even if you are very aligned with yourself and what you want to achieve, you will naturally fail. When this happens, it's important to analyze what you could have done differently, as well as the factors involved, while trying not to get into a cycle of self-criticism that frustrates you and leads to procrastination.
Another factor that contributes to procrastination is the creation of distant or very complex goals. This is because these tasks are usually put to be done later, since they are more difficult, and therefore, they end up not being done and postponed indefinitely.
To achieve these “higher” goals, experts recommend breaking them down into smaller steps with more achievable deadlines. As a result, small steps towards the project become victories and raise self-esteem.
